Microsoft says 'no Alan Wake in 2007'

Microsoft has dashed any last vestiges of hope fans of Alan Wake may have had for the game's release this year, confirming it's not a 2007 title.

Alan Wake is a title that the company wants to nurture and ensure it's "really ready" when it's ushered back into the limelight, managing director of Microsoft Game Studios, Shane Kim, told Game Informer.

However, Kim explained that it's a game Microsoft wouldn't be talking about if it were "way out in the future". So 2008 then? Could be.

Body of James Kim Found

The body of missing CNET senior editor, James Kim, was found Wednesday approximately half a mile from the Rogue River in Oregon, US. Kim and his family were on their way home from a Thanksgiving get together when their car became stuck in the snow on a desolate side road. The family ran the car's engine to keep warm and then resorted to burning the tires for heat when the gas ran out. After exhausting all means of providing warmth for his family, James set out for help carrying little more than the clothes on his back. James is survived by his wife, Kati, and two children who were discovered alive on Monday, December 4th and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Neowin.net sends out it's deepest condolences to the Kim family.

Domain name '.eu' open for business

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- The European Union planted its flag in cyberspace Wednesday when the ".eu" Internet domain name opened for business.

Until now, Europeans had to choose between a national domain such as ".fr" for France or a global one like ".com," which is often seen as American.

EU Information Society Commissioner Viviane Reding said she expected several hundred thousand sign-ups for ".eu" in the first few days. National registries in some countries -- such as Belgium, home to the EU headquarters in Brussels -- are offering promotions to persuade Internet users to stay local.

But do Europeans want a ".eu" domain name? Some business groups are uncertain how popular it will be. Europeans have an EU flag, an EU passport and an EU anthem but many have a lukewarm attitude to European integration -- as French and Dutch "no" votes to a new constitution showed this year...

No Windows 7 upgrade option in the EU

Today Microsoft announced the pricing of Windows 7. As previously reported on Neowin, the EU will be getting a version that will not contain IE and because of this Microsoft will be offering no upgrade option in the EU. There is a silver lining to this announcement and it's that the full price of Windows 7 will be at the equaliviant price to the upgrade option.

Microsoft's Shane Kim Talks of Xbox 360 Price Cuts

Many expected Microsoft to announce Xbox 360 price cuts across the board at this years E3. For those that labored through Microsofts E3 keynote, there was no such announcement. So if you were disappointed with Microsoft's E3 keynote and the announcement of a Halo 3-themed Xbox 360 instead of price cuts, this bit of news may make your ears perk up.

According to Microsoft Game Studios VP Shane Kim, a price cut is in store for the Xbox 360 game console. In an interview with Bloomberg, Kim talked of competing with the Nintendo Wii and revealed that "We need to compete effectively for that customer and part of that is getting to the mass market price point for the console. We definitely are working on that area."

Kim declined to give a date for when the price cut would occur, but a holiday 2007 price cut would do wonders for the platform along with the release of Halo 3 and Grand Theft Auto 4. The timing depends on a lot of different factors and we'll just keep evaluating those, said Microsofts Robbie Bach...

We won't kill off the Xbox 360

In an interview with 1UP, Microsoft's Shane Kim has reassured gamers that the company will not 'kill off' the Xbox 360 as it did with the original Xbox, and that it hopes its current console will have the staying power of Sony's PS2.

"If we could have a PS2-like tail, that would be awesome for the Xbox 360. I don't think you're going to see the same abrupt move to the next-generation," Kim says. "We'll have a much more balanced approach when the next-generation arrives."

Once the Xbox 360 launched worldwide at the end of 2005, Microsoft had already dropped all software support for the Xbox and third parties quickly followed suite - though by its own admission Microsoft never planned on leading that particular console race, and the decision was made to launch its next console ahead of the competition.

"We knew we weren't going to win the last generation, so it's not about 'How do we milk as much money as we can out of the last generation', it's about how do we define the future," says Kim. "That's what winning the next-generation is all about."

Phone cams forced to "audibly" click when taking pics soon?

According to the Library of Congress, eight-term US Republican Congressman Peter "Pete" King has introduced bill H.R.414 which would make it manditory that all camera phones make a "click" sound when they take a picture. The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and at some point may become the law of the land. The reasoning behind the submission is to stop people taking "secret" shots (in public toilets and changing rooms, for instance). The so-called "Camera Phone Predator alert Act" would also make it illegal and "impossible" for any such phone to be hacked to avoid making this sound.

EU to continue anti-trust case, regardless of Windows 7 E

The recent shenanigans between the EU and Microsoft have been rather tedious; it's taken a long time for anything to happen, really, and Microsoft has even had to cancel a hearing once. However, with the recent introduction of Windows 7 E, many thought that the trouble would be over... but they were wrong. Nope, according to Ars Technica, the EU is still set on pursuing their anti-trust case with the Redmond company, despite them going out of their way to create a new SKU just for the region.
